EU increases pressure on Russia: 17th sanctions package about to take effect!
The EU has decided to implement another package of sanctions against Russia, which is the 17th in a row. This is in response to Russia's ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine. The aim of these measures is to stop the Russian war machine and further increase the pressure on Moscow. The new penalties are particularly aimed at the Russian shadow fleet, which is responsible for the transport of oil and oil products. It is estimated that this approach could put a significant strain on the Russian economy, which has so far remained relatively unscathed, as noted by the think tank The Atlantic Council.
The new sanctions package consists of various measures that also target companies that circumvent the existing sanctions or support the defense industry in Russia. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced that an 18th sanctions package is already being prepared, which will include measures against the resumption of operation of the Nord Stream gas pipelines as well as stricter rules for Russian oil. According to reports, this escalation may be related to the failure of recent peace initiatives and Moscow's intransigent stance.
Concrete measures and effects
The specific measures in the current sanctions package include banning 189 additional ships from docking in EU ports. In addition, the operators of these ships are no longer allowed to use services from EU companies. Around 30 companies and 75 people and organizations, including Surgutneftegas, are affected by new export bans. In addition, criminal action was taken against those spreading disinformation, including two German bloggers who spread false news about the Ukraine war.
Great Britain has also reacted to the situation and adopted new criminal measures against Russia. These primarily affect companies, banks and ships in the shadow fleet. The trigger for the British sanctions was a massive drone attack by Russia on Ukraine on May 18, which further motivated the decision.
Looking into the future
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is calling for further sanctions in Germany, particularly against the energy sector, in order to intensify pressure on Moscow. Given the ongoing conflicts and the Russian economy's remarkable resilience to previous sanctions, the EU is determined to toughen its measures.
The measures are not only directed against the economy, but also have environmental aspects, as Russia's shadow fleet is considered to be harmful to the environment. Experts also warn of potential risks to shipping and the environment due to aging tankers and technical deficiencies. The international community is committed to addressing environmental protection needs while maintaining pressure on Russia.
