Europe's path to climate-friendly industry: The big change!

In June 2025, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the “Clean Industry Deal”, which aims to promote the competitiveness and resilience of European industry. MEPs welcomed the move and highlighted the importance of a strong, competitive industry in the fight against climate change. These initiatives are intended to drive decarbonization and secure the future of manufacturing in Europe. The EU Commission initiated this deal to address various challenges, such as high energy prices and excessive regulatory burdens germany.representation.ec.europa.eu reported.

MEPs called for the introduction of new financing instruments to boost investment in clean technologies and stressed the need to reduce bureaucratic hurdles. Smaller companies in particular should benefit from simplified regulations and accelerated approval procedures. A central point is also the recognition and promotion of permanent CO₂ reduction as a realistic option for areas with emissions that are difficult to avoid.

Decarbonization as a growth engine

Decarbonization is seen as a driver of prosperity and growth, according to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who describes the deal as a bold business case. Stéphane Séjourné emphasizes that Europe should take on a global leadership role in clean industries. This will be supported by measures to increase the efficiency of the regulatory environment and reduce bureaucratic hurdles, as planned by the Commission.

The deal focuses particularly on energy-intensive industries and clean technologies. This includes specific action plans for key sectors such as the automotive, steel and metals industries. To reduce energy costs and promote clean energy adoption, an Affordable Energy Action Plan will be implemented. This is intended to help stimulate demand for clean products and secure financing for the energy transition.

Financial support and innovation

The deal mobilizes over 100 billion euros in the short term to support clean production in the EU. A new state aid framework aims to promote the deployment of renewable energy and a law to accelerate industrial decarbonization introduces sustainability criteria in public procurement. The Commission also plans to set up an EU center for critical raw materials to ensure access to important materials.

A circular economy law will accelerate the transition to a circular economy. In the future, partnerships for clean trade and investments will also be sought in order to diversify supply chains. A key aspect is the formation of a skills union aimed at securing qualified workers for the industry. The deal for a clean industry is therefore not just a step towards environmental sustainability, but a comprehensive concept to secure Europe's economic future europarl.europa.eu highlights.
