ECB President Lagarde wants to reduce monetary policy restrictions
European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde recently stressed that it would be appropriate to ease current monetary policy restrictions once inflation criteria are met. She emphasized that the ECB Governing Council does not yet have a set interest rate path for the future and that the risks to the inflation outlook should be viewed as two-sided.
These statements by Lagarde did not have a serious impact on the EUR/USD exchange rate at the time of publication. The pair was trading just 0.15% higher at 1.0660 at press time. The market reaction to Lagarde's comments remained muted.
It becomes clear that the ECB could adjust its monetary policy measures based on inflation developments, but without a predetermined path. The assessment that risks to the inflation outlook are both upside and downside suggests a cautious approach from the central bank.
It remains to be seen how inflation and the economic situation in the Eurozone will develop and to what extent the ECB will react to this. Lagarde's hints about a possible easing of monetary policy restrictions represent an important factor for the central bank's future monetary policy.
