Shortage of skilled workers in the trades: Young people prefer influencer jobs

The shortage of skilled workers in the skilled trades poses a serious threat to the energy transition. A survey by Bitkom Research shows that more and more young people want to become influencers, while interest in skilled trades is decreasing. According to the Federal Institute for Vocational Training, only 17 percent of the young people surveyed want to learn a skilled trade. This contributes to the fact that almost 20,000 training positions in skilled trades in Germany remain unfilled.

The unfilled positions mean fewer orders processed, rising prices and even the risk that profitable craft businesses are threatened with closure because no successors can be found. It is predicted that over 700,000 workers will leave the workforce between 2022 and 2027, further increasing the need for skilled workers. This is further exacerbated by the fact that many young people are dropping out of their education, even though their share of the labor market will increase in the future.

The President of the Federal Institute for Vocational Training, Prof. Dr. Friedrich Hubert Esser, warns that the shortage of skilled workers will have serious social consequences, as the shortage of skilled workers could lead to higher prices for craft services. It is emphasized that well-trained craftsmen are essential to successfully implement the energy transition and other important social changes.

Experts agree that vocational education urgently needs to be strengthened, both financially and in terms of reputation. It is noted that the equivalence of vocational training compared to academic education must be enshrined in law. The crafts association is also calling for more investment in vocational training in order to create efficient educational institutions and digital educational offerings. It is emphasized that school policy measures are crucial to increasing young people's interest in crafts and making them more attractive.
