Gas prices for new customers rise by one cent
Gas prices for new customers in Germany have risen significantly in recent weeks. Experts at the comparison portal Verivox attribute this increase to rising wholesale prices and the return of the regular VAT rate in April. A household with an annual consumption of 20,000 kilowatt hours paid an average of around 6.5 cents per kilowatt hour in March 2024, while the current cheapest offer is around 7.6 cents per kilowatt hour - an increase of around 17 percent.
The VAT had been temporarily reduced since October 2022 to relieve the burden on households due to high energy prices. A sample family with an annual gas consumption of around 20,000 kilowatt hours was saved an average of 426 euros. However, the full VAT rate will now be charged again.
In the local basic supply tariff, the average gas price for household customers in April 2024 is 14.26 cents per kilowatt hour. With a consumption of 20,000 kilowatt hours, this corresponds to costs of 2,852 euros. However, by choosing a cheap tariff with a price guarantee, households could almost halve their heating costs, says Verivox.
The comparison portal advises consumers to secure a fixed gas price for the coming heating season now, as wholesale prices for natural gas could continue to rise. By concluding a cheap gas contract with a price guarantee, consumers could stabilize the current price level for the coming heating season.
