Gas prices are rising: Experts recommend setting a fixed gas price
In Germany, consumers are currently experiencing a noticeable increase in gas prices for new customers. According to an analysis by the comparison portal Verivox, consumers pay around one cent more per kilowatt hour when signing a new contract than they did a month ago. This increase is attributed to rising wholesale prices and regular VAT from April.
The research shows that gas prices have risen significantly, with the cheapest national average tariff being around 7.6 cents/kWh. Compared to March 2024, this corresponds to an increase of around 17 percent. In order to relieve the burden on households due to high energy prices, the VAT was reduced from 19 to seven percent, which enabled savings for average families with an annual gas consumption of around 20,000 kilowatt hours. However, the full VAT rate will now be charged again.
Experts advise gas customers to agree on a fixed gas price for the coming heating season in order to protect themselves from further price increases. Wholesale natural gas prices in Europe are on the move and could continue to rise. By taking out a cheap gas tariff with a price guarantee, consumers can secure the current price level.
It is recommended to take early measures to counteract possible further increases in gas prices. Experts such as energy expert Thorsten Storck from Verivox emphasize the importance of keeping a close eye on current price developments and, if necessary, opting for long-term stable tariffs.
