Habeck is planning international guest professorships: A new course for the future!
Robert Habeck, the former Green Party economics minister and current member of the Bundestag, is planning a switch to the academic world. He would like to work at the Danish Institute for International Studies in Copenhagen and at the same time seek visiting professorships at various non-European universities. In addition to academic engagements, Habeck plans to work as a freelance speaker. His language skills in Danish, which he acquired during part of his studies in Denmark, will certainly be an advantage. The federal government has not yet raised any objections to his plans.
It remains unclear whether Habeck would like to retain his Bundestag mandate. He represents the Flensburg-Schleswig constituency and sits on the Foreign Affairs Committee. Nevertheless, he has announced that he will start a series of discussions entitled “Habeck live” at the Berliner Ensemble from October. This could indicate a transition to a new phase in his career after he won 11.6 percent of the vote for the Greens in the last federal election and announced his withdrawal from the party's front row but still accepted his mandate.
Freelance work after politics
In parallel to Habeck's plans, Jörg Kukies, former interim finance minister, is also planning a career as a freelance speaker. The federal government has also given the green light for Kukies. According to the Federal Ministers Act, the government can prohibit former ministers from carrying out activities within 18 months of leaving office if this could endanger public interests. In the case of MPs like Habeck, the MPs Act states that the exercise of the mandate must be the focus, while part-time activities are generally permitted.
