Hessian companies critical: EU as a business location in danger

Hessian business people are expressing increasing concerns about the EU as a business location. Bureaucracy and the high level of regulation are cited as the main reasons for this development. According to Kirsten Schoder-Steinmüller, President of the Hessian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (HIHK) in Wiesbaden, many companies in Hesse have noticed a decline in the EU's attractiveness as a business location over the last five years.

The opinions of entrepreneurs are divided because, although they recognize the advantages of European integration for the economy, they also clearly identify the negative effects. 80 percent of those surveyed value the political stability of the EU, followed by the common currency at 79 percent. Other important factors include access to European markets, uniform EU norms and standards and fewer distortions of competition.

The survey showed that 94 percent of the companies surveyed in Hesse are calling for a reduction in bureaucracy. A secure energy supply is considered extremely relevant by 67 percent, followed by strengthening competitiveness and protection against digital and analog attacks. Fewer barriers in the internal market and a better legal framework for new technologies or climate protection are the focus of only around one in four companies.

In addition to the Hessian survey, a study by the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce showed that the entire EU is becoming less attractive as an industrial location. Experts emphasize the urgent need for action to strengthen competitiveness and improve the framework conditions for companies.
