More and more Germans are paying over 50% of their wages for rent!
Around 15 percent of people in Germany spend more than half of their net salary on rent. This was the result of a current survey by YouGov on behalf of the German Press Agency, in which over 4,000 people took part, including almost 2,400 tenants. The pressure on renters is further increased by the constantly rising cost of living.
The survey shows that 3 percent of those surveyed spend more than 70 percent of their income on rent. In contrast, only 8 percent pay less than 20 percent of their take-home pay for housing. Almost half of those surveyed, specifically 49 percent, spend between 20 and 39 percent of their income on rent.
Inadequate housing conditions
Housing conditions in Germany are an alarming problem. According to the survey, 53 percent of renters have more rooms than people in their apartment. 37 percent live in a mathematically balanced ratio of one room per resident, while 6 percent live in apartments that offer fewer rooms than residents. Around one in nine people in Germany lives in cramped living conditions.
Single parents, people at risk of poverty and adults with foreign passports are particularly affected by these abuses. A study by Eurostat showed that in 2022 around 11.5 percent of people in Germany lived in overcrowded apartments. The data also shows that people in urban areas are three times more likely to suffer from a housing shortage than those living in rural areas.
Conclusion on the rental situation
The results of the survey illustrate the urgent problem of high rental prices in Germany and the associated challenges for the population. The housing market is facing major challenges and politicians are required to find solutions that ensure adequate housing for everyone.
