Anniversary: Frankfurt and Slubice celebrate 20 years of joining the EU
Frankfurt (Oder) and Slubice are two cities that, although separated by the Oder river, are closely connected in their daily life. On May 1st they will celebrate together the 20th anniversary of Poland's accession to the EU. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski and Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) are expected on this historic day. Together they will visit a European festival, cross the Oder Bridge and exchange ideas with students from the European University Viadrina. Brandenburg's Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) will also take part in the celebrations.
To commemorate this historic act, former Federal Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer (Greens) and his Polish counterpart Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz will also be present. In 2004, they ushered in a new era of partnership with a symbolic handshake at midnight on the city bridge between Frankfurt and Slubice, which was enthusiastically celebrated by a cheering crowd.
Poland's accession to the EU 20 years ago also marked the eastern expansion of the European Union. In addition to Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Malta and Cyprus also joined the EU on this day. Today, thousands of people commute between the two cities every day to work, go to school or shop. The festival under the motto “Europe is here!” on May 1st in the twin city of Slubice/Frankfurt (Oder) will offer music, a photo exhibition, presentations of the border regions and a festive concert.
