Chancellor Scholz in China: Complaints about a lack of competitive opportunities

During his stay in China, Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited Tongji University in Shanghai, where he spoke to students about freedom, especially in view of increasing competition from rapidly growing Chinese technology. He emphasized the importance of fair competitive conditions, especially in the areas of high-tech, the automotive industry and renewable energies.

The German Foreign Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai discussed with Scholz the need to become more competitive in order to survive in the Chinese market. Many German companies in China complain about unfair conditions, such as the lack of access to networks and public tenders, which Scholz sees as important topics for political discussions.

The EU is currently examining the possibility of anti-dumping tariffs on Chinese electric cars amid fears that unauthorized subsidies could influence prices. German car companies are concerned about possible countermeasures from China, as the Chinese market is of great importance to them. Scholz emphasized that the strength of German companies is crucial to survive in global competition and warned against protectionist motives.

The discussion about fairer competition and strengthening German companies continues as the Chancellor's delegation travels to Beijing to speak with high-ranking Chinese representatives. Topics such as the Ukraine war and Iran's attack on Israel should also be on the agenda.
