Measles is spreading rapidly around the world, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO). By the beginning of April this year, 94,481 confirmed cases had already been registered. Compared to 2023, there was an increase of 88 percent with a good 320,000 detected infections. However, the actual number of infections is higher because many cases are not recorded. In 2022, the WHO estimated the number of infections at nine million, with around 136,000 people dying from measles, mostly children under five.

Measles is a preventable, life-threatening viral infectious disease that can be prevented through vaccination. Although reported infection numbers vary from year to year, for example in 2019 they were over half a million, while in 2021 there were only around 60,000 cases. Globally, the WHO Europe region accounts for 45 percent of this year's measles cases, with the highest infection rates in countries such as Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), there were 162 reported cases of measles in Germany as of April 21st. There is a significant increase compared to the previous year, when there were only 10 cases in the same period. The WHO warns of increasing outbreaks due to inadequate vaccination rates in the global population. However, global vaccination rates are currently below recommended levels, with only 83 percent for the first dose and 74 percent for the second dose.

Measles should actually be eradicated because it is an extremely contagious disease that can cause serious complications such as encephalitis. Typical symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat and headache, followed by a characteristic rash. It is strongly recommended that you and your family be vaccinated to curb the spread of this dangerous disease.
