Climate protection costs: Study quantifies immense economic damage

According to a recent study by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), the costs associated with climate change are far higher than the costs of combating the consequences of climate change. A key hurdle in the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable alternatives is the disagreement over who should ultimately bear the costs. It is often underestimated that passivity when it comes to climate protection also has significant financial consequences.

The PIK studies, published in the renowned specialist magazine “Nature”, show alarming economic damage caused by climate change. The projected costs are not only astonishing but also worrying. It is becoming clear that the consequences of climate change are causing significant financial burdens at both a global and individual level.

Avoiding action to mitigate climate change can cost six times more in the long term than investing in preventative measures. This finding highlights the urgency and need to take the threat of climate change seriously and act decisively to limit the economic damage.

The results of the PIK study underline the fact that the financial impacts of climate change are already noticeable and will continue to worsen in the future if effective countermeasures are not taken. It is becoming clear that investing in climate protection is not only an ecological but also an economic necessity in order to avoid harmful costs in the long term.
