Criticism of Bad Kreuznach's bed tax: Does it endanger tourism?
On May 14, 2025, a press conference by the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA) took place in Bad Kreuznach, at which the planned introduction of a bed tax in the city was heavily criticized. This tax is intended to help cover the deficits of the Crucenia thermal baths and the bathhouse. The hotel and catering industry is skeptical and warns that the bed tax cannot represent a sustainable solution to the city's financial problems. Instead, companies fear that this measure could jeopardize Bad Kreuznach's attractiveness and that visitor numbers will decline.
Gereon Haumann, President of DEHOGA Rhineland-Palatinate, underlined the industry's concerns at the press conference. In his opinion, the introduction of increasing taxes could lead to a downward spiral: “Rising taxes, decreasing attractiveness, declining guest numbers,” says Haumann. DEHOGA calls on the city to examine alternative solutions and to question existing structures. In a letter to the city, they emphasize that the bed tax will not lead to an expansion of tourist offerings.
Urban budget situation and alternatives
The mayor of Bad Kreuznach, Emanuel Letz, shows understanding for the concerns of the hotel and catering industry. He explains that due to a budget deficit of around 20 million euros, the city is forced to consider new types of taxes such as the bed tax. Treasurer Thomas Blechschmidt emphasizes that the city needs funds to refinance running costs in order to cover expenses in the long term.
The city finance committee already addressed the issue at the end of last year. Despite the negative attitude of DEHOGA or the concerns of entrepreneurs, the discussion about the bed tax remains a hot topic in the city. As an alternative solution, Haumann suggests introducing a Bad Kreuznach Card, which could offer tourists other benefits instead of burdening them with an additional tax.
The decision regarding the collection and increase of taxes and fees ultimately rests with the city council. The further procedure will significantly affect both the citizens and the affected companies in Bad Kreuznach.
