WK President Jürgen Mandl described the upcoming stop as a great success for the region, while Hannes Mak, a member of the state parliament, sees it as a strong signal for the development of the area. State Transport Councilor Sebastian Schuschnig, who has fought for years for a long-distance traffic stop in Kühnsdorf, also emphasizes the importance of this decision: “It is a great step forward for southern Carinthia,” he said in an interview. Negotiations between WESTbahn, ÖBB and representatives of the state government ultimately led to this positive result.

In addition, the trains will travel at speeds of up to 250 km/h on the new southern route, which will significantly shorten travel times. Travelers can use both the Austrian Climate Ticket and the Carinthia Ticket.
Cooperation between Westbahn and ÖBB
WESTbahn has announced a cooperation with ÖBB to integrate the stop at Lake Klopein into the timetables for the southern route. Sebastian Schuschnig expects that the binding scheduling and stop of the two transport companies in Kühnsdorf will be determined from the timetable change in December 2025.
The implementation of these plans was supported by two reports that confirmed the feasibility of a stop in the timetable structure. WESTbahn board member Marco Ramsbacher speaks of a “new chapter” for the region and is pleased with the progress that has been achieved through cooperation with politicians.
