Artful prizes: MANUFACTUM 2025 shines in Dortmund!
On June 21, 2025, the award ceremony for the state MANUFACTUM Prize took place in Dortmund City Hall. This important award for applied art and design in the craft sector, which has been awarded every two years by the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia since 1963, attracted 353 applications this year.
During the award ceremony, Economics Minister Mona Neubaur emphasized the essential role of ideas and passion in crafts. A total of 60,000 euros in prize money will be awarded to honor the outstanding achievements of the craftsmen and designers from NRW. The state exhibition “Manufactum” in the Dortmund Museum for Art and Cultural History is showing award-winning works and other submissions from the competition until September 21st.

Participation and organization
Participation in the competition was aimed at craftsmen and designers aged 25 and over who live or work in North Rhine-Westphalia. The application deadline ended on February 23, 2025. Participants were required to submit a work they had designed and carried out themselves, whereby the involvement of third parties had to be made transparent.
The competition and exhibition were organized for the first time by the West German Chamber of Crafts Association in collaboration with the Dortmund Museum for Art and Cultural History. The selection of submitted works focused on craftsmanship precision, innovative design as well as material-appropriate implementation and technology. Particularly noteworthy works that did not meet all of the evaluation criteria could be included in the exhibition, but were excluded from the awarding of the prize.
This initiative not only focuses on supporting crafts, but also promotes creativity and design within the region, which is impressively represented by the exhibition. The works of the prize winners and other participants can be seen in Dortmund until September 21st.
