Medium-sized businesses in crisis: Politics must act before it is too late

Companies should not get lost in constant complaining, but rather show resilience and independently find ways to innovate. German medium-sized companies have always proven themselves in this area. However, the current political landscape is putting this attitude to the test as lip service dominates rather than concrete action. Alarming signals such as the decline in GDP in 2023 illustrate the need for business-friendly policies in order not to further endanger Germany's position. It is crucial that the government acts to increase the attractiveness of the location and attract investment.

A recently published fire letter from leading business associations calls on the federal government to urgently send a “signal of departure”. It is emphasized that the attractiveness of the location is decreasing, investments are lacking and the relocation of industrial activities is increasing. In order to counteract this trend, improved framework conditions and a clear growth orientation in politics are essential. Companies like the PWO Group, a global mobility supplier, need long-term political stability, consistent tax policy and reliable trade agreements in order to make investment decisions for the German location.

Bureaucracy in Germany paralyzes many business processes and requires urgent reduction to ensure efficiency and cost optimization. Suggestions for de-bureaucratization range from abolishing unnecessary written forms to digitalization in various areas. Another important aspect is securing qualified specialists, as the lack of digital skills is becoming increasingly noticeable. Politicians should therefore strengthen measures to promote education and qualification, and improve work incentives in order to make the labor market more attractive.

It is the responsibility of politics, business and society to find pragmatic solutions together and to strengthen Germany's business location. It is time to take responsibility and tackle the challenges cooperatively in order to enable a flourishing economy in Germany.
