New dialogue point for business in Kalkar: University and companies united!

The University of Applied Sciences has set up a new contact point in Kalkar to promote dialogue between the university and business. This initiative is part of a larger project that aims to strengthen cooperation with regional companies. The aim is to make better use of the university's economic expertise and thus support the domestic labor market. The new economic dialogue point is located in the Kalkar business and start-up center in Kehrum and was sealed by an official signing by both parties.

Julia Roelofsen, innovation manager for business in the TransRegINT project, is the contact person for interested companies and can be contacted on 02821 806 73-9938 or by email at transregint@hochschule-rhein-waal.de. This initiative is not only a benefit for local companies, but also for the university's students, who benefit from the close connection to practice.

Advantages of the University of Applied Sciences

The University of Applied Sciences (HAW), also known as a university of applied sciences, is characterized by a high level of practical relevance and close networking with regional and international companies. There are over 200 universities of this type in Germany, with the HAW being founded around 50 years ago. Compared to universities, the focus is more on application-related research and teaching.

An important feature of the HAW is the modern teaching design, which includes small teaching groups and practical exercises in laboratories and technical project groups. An internship or practical semester is usually mandatory, which significantly improves graduates' career prospects. Currently, around 40% of all students in Germany are enrolled at universities of applied sciences or technical colleges.

International aspects of the HAW

The HAW is also very popular with international students. In the 2022/23 winter semester, around 158,000 international students studied at HAW, which underlines the demand for skilled workers with intercultural skills. HAW actively invests in internationalization and offers numerous courses with an international focus. There are also scholarships and funding opportunities for international students that are accessible through the DAAD.

HAW graduates often achieve permanent jobs with a higher starting salary compared to their fellow university students. Their degrees are equivalent, and the institutes are increasingly expanding their right to award doctorates in order to further promote academic careers. Close cooperation with industry and practical training are essential factors that contribute to regional development and the university's innovative strength.
