ÖAMTC Travel Monitoring 2024: Austrians remain keen to travel despite rising costs

As part of the ÖAMTC travel monitoring, 1,000 people in Austria were once again surveyed this year about their vacation plans, types of travel and behavior. A notable finding from the survey is Austrians' high desire to travel. Despite ongoing inflation, 95% of those surveyed plan to travel at least once in the summer. Only 5% have not yet planned a vacation or are still undecided.

The survey shows that 70% of those surveyed would like to travel abroad, with those under 30 particularly tending to spend their summer vacation outside of Austria. However, half of those surveyed also plan to spend their vacation in their own country, with Austrian vacations being particularly popular among the 50-59 age group.

Although the desire to travel is high, the price increase is dampening the joy somewhat. The average holiday budget for Austrians is around EUR 1,062 per person, although many travelers are forced to save due to inflation. In particular, spending on accommodation, on-site and the number and duration of trips are the focus of the budget cuts.

When it comes to travel destinations, six out of ten respondents prefer a stay by the sea, while 30% are planning a city break. Italy and Croatia are still the top travel destinations for Austrians, followed by Greece, Spain, Germany and Turkey. It is also worth mentioning that the majority of those surveyed are also planning a holiday within Austria, with Carinthia and Styria being particularly attractive destinations.
