Public transport anniversary: RMV and NVV celebrate successes and start future plans!

Local public transport (ÖPNV) in Germany is in a phase of realignment and growth. In particular, the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) and the Nordhessischer Verkehrsverbund (NVV) are celebrating several anniversaries and successes this year. A central element of these developments is the Deutschlandticket, introduced last year, which not only serves as a kind of career ticket for regional public transport, but also generates great satisfaction among users. According to the latest information from sueddeutsche.de The Deutschlandticket has now become the central ticket in the RMV area.

The Deutschlandticket is very popular: around 96 percent of subscribers in the RMV area are satisfied with the new ticket. Around 23 million people have bought the ticket at least once in the last two years. It is noteworthy that 68 percent of Deutschland Ticket holders also use it regularly. This shows that the ticket is not just a one-off offer, but has found a real place in passengers' everyday lives.

Growth and challenges in public transport

The founding of the RMV and NVV transport associations in 1995 aimed to establish “one timetable, one ticket, one fare” for the region. In 2022, the RMV recorded a record number of 825 million passengers, despite challenges such as a lack of staff and extensive construction work. Managing director Knut Ringat expects that demand for public transport services will continue to increase. “The next five years are the decade of construction,” says Ringat, who emphasizes the importance of investment-safe financing from the federal and state governments in order to be able to offer additional trains and better services.

Meanwhile, the NVV has strengthened regional bus transport with its expansion offer “Every Village – Every Hour”, which has led to an increase in passenger numbers of 10.3 percent compared to the previous year. Managing director Marian Volmer is calling for additional financial resources for necessary infrastructure improvements in order to continue to guarantee the quality and reliability of the offering.

Ecological effects of the Germany ticket

Another aspect that contributes to the positive balance of the Deutschlandticket is the ecological component. Since the ticket was introduced, 2.3 million tons of CO2 have been saved. This shows that the Deutschlandticket not only offers users monetary savings of an average of 17.10 euros per month, but also makes a valuable contribution to climate protection. Over 60 percent of tickets are purchased digitally, with mobile phone tickets being particularly popular.

In summary, the RMV and NVV can look back on a successful past and are optimistic about the future. In the near future, the RMV will be holding a celebration to mark its 30th anniversary in Frankfurt's Römer, while the NVV also wants to set an example with its passenger campaign “You are the best” and a big celebration planned in September. Both initiatives aim to strengthen the bond with passengers and continue to grow.
