Austrian companies at a glance: Profits from Germany's economic stimulus package!

On May 12, 2025, the new Austrian federal government announced a comprehensive billion-dollar savings package in Vienna. At the same time, the federal government in Berlin is working on an economic stimulus package worth 500 billion euros. This package is intended to help the German economy and could also have positive effects on Austria.

Economics Minister Wolfgang Hattmansdorfer (ÖVP) held a meeting with his counterpart Katherina Reiche (CDU) in Berlin. The focus of the conversation was on the topics of infrastructure, digitalization and climate protection. Hattmansdorfer emphasized that Austria could benefit from an economic upswing in Germany, especially with regard to the country's export-oriented economy.

Exports and corporate dependency

In 2024, around 30% of all Austrian exports, which corresponds to over 56 billion euros, will be delivered to Germany. Many Austrian companies are an integral part of German supply chains and are therefore heavily dependent on demand in Germany. There are particularly great opportunities for Austrian companies in mechanical and plant engineering, automotive suppliers, control and automation technology and environmental and energy technologies.

The market leader Strabag, which employs 40,000 people and is also active in Germany, sees the planned special fund for infrastructure as an important step. However, CEO Stefan Kratochwill expects that the first projects from this package will not start until 2026 at the earliest. However, in order to develop the full impact of the package, it is necessary to accelerate the planning and approval processes in Germany, emphasizes Kratochwill.

Economic challenges and concerns

In addition, the former German Economics Minister Robert Habeck is calling for reforms to increase the location's competitiveness. In Germany, the importance of stable trade relationships with reliable partner countries is emphasized in order to strengthen the resilience of the German economy. This includes not only partners in the EU, but also countries outside the Union.

The Federal Government would like to better take the risks of economic interdependencies into account, especially in the context of autocratic governments and the ongoing Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. Diversifying trade, supply and raw material relationships is considered necessary, even though this may involve higher costs and possible competitive disadvantages. The Federal Government is thus responding to the critical voices with regard to maximum diversification and the associated challenges.

Overall, the economic situation remains tense in both Germany and Austria, but the planned measures offer opportunities for improved economic cooperation.
