Prices in Saxony remain stable: consumers breathe a sigh of relief!
In May 2023, consumer prices in Saxony remained constant compared to April sueddeutsche.de reported. This is the last similar situation since June 2022. While some prices remained stable, food and non-alcoholic drinks saw a decrease of 0.1 percent. The drop in prices for fresh vegetables was particularly noticeable, which was 10.6 percent cheaper without potatoes.
On the other hand, coffee prices rose by 5.4 percent, while they increased by almost a quarter compared to last year. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco products also rose in price by 0.9 percent. Beer prices were slightly lower on Men's Day, down 0.1 percent.
Annual price development
However, in a year-on-year comparison, i.e. compared to May 2024, things look different: prices rose by an average of 2.3 percent. Food and non-alcoholic drinks became 3.2 percent more expensive. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco products recorded an increase of 4.1 percent, followed by education costs with an increase of 4.5 percent. Restaurant and accommodation services also rose by 4.1 percent, while plants and flowers became more expensive by 7.1 percent.
Positive news comes from the energy sector: fuel prices fell by 6 percent, heating oil fell by 11 percent, including operating costs, and electricity became cheaper by 6.5 percent. These price changes are important for consumers and are reflected in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which shows the price development of all goods and services purchased by private households for consumption purposes, such as statistic.sachsen.de emphasized.
The picture of the price development
The consumer price index is a central indicator for assessing monetary stability and shows price changes for everyday goods, consumer goods and services. The CPI also reflects the development of rental prices and serves not only to secure the value of recurring payments, but also to deflate values in the national accounts.
The current situation in Saxony illustrates the diverse influences on price developments, which are of great importance for households. In times of economic uncertainty, such information is essential to optimally plan your own expenses and investments.
