Price reductions at discounters: A relief for households!
On June 2, 2025, several discounters will announce price cuts for groceries. This measure comes in response to the high burden on households caused by the continued rise in the cost of living. The aim of price reductions is to strengthen consumers' purchasing power. The first discount retailer to make this announcement started a trend that other retailers will follow. However, it is currently unclear which specific products will be affected by the price cuts and how long they will remain in effect.
The general cost of living had risen sharply recently, creating a sense of burden among the public. Many consumers find inflation to be a significant disadvantage in their everyday lives. Nevertheless, there is also positive news that could put the situation into perspective. According to a report by BR Many wages and pensions have also increased, which could compensate for the higher prices. This development can be illustrated by the increase in real net wages.
The development of real wages
The German Economic Institute (IW) reports that the net real wage per hour worked rose from 19.12 euros in 1994 to 24.79 euros in 2024. However, this positive development has not been consistent in all years. The values fell in 2021 and 2022, but have now been leveled out again. Last year 2023, the net real wage rose from 23.03 euros to 24.79 euros, which means an increase of around 280 euros per month for 160 working hours, despite inflationary tendencies.
Average wage increases often exceed inflation and also changes in taxes and social security contributions. This shows that although wage increases are often delayed, which can temporarily lead to lower purchasing power, the long-term prospects for many employees are still positive.
The announced price reductions in combination with increased incomes could therefore represent an important step towards improving the economic situation in households. Consumers can be curious to see which products will be offered cheaper in the coming weeks and how effective these measures will be on purchasing power in the long term.
