Saarland relies on India: exports are booming, new markets are waiting!

India is becoming increasingly important for Saarland's industry. With a population of around 1.5 billion people, the country shows great interest in products from Germany and especially Saarland. The Saarland Chamber of Commerce and Industry has set itself the goal of further intensifying trade relations with India. Oliver Groll, head of the Saarland IHK's Foreign Trade Competence Center, emphasizes the need to open up new sales markets in order to secure economic success.

Foreign trade between Saarland and India has almost doubled in the past ten years and currently amounts to around 172 million euros. Exports to India currently make up around 1% of Saarland's total foreign trade. The main products exported to India from here include steel, auto parts and machinery.

Successful companies and expansion plans

An example of successful export is SGGT Hydraulik from Neunkirchen, which sells hydraulic machines to India that are used in steel processing. SGGT Hydraulik's share of sales in India has increased from 9% to almost 25%, and the company plans to open a location in India later this year.

This development is part of a larger trend in bilateral trade in goods between Germany and India. Loud Germany Trade and Invest This trade reached a peak of $33.4 billion in 2024, with a 2.6 percent increase in German goods exports.

Important export goods and trends

The most important German exports to India are machinery, chemical products and aircraft and parts. Machinery alone accounts for over a quarter of all German exports to India. This is partly because Indian airlines are expanding their fleets, creating additional opportunities for maintenance and parts manufacturers.

Demand for German products in India is supported by the country's rapid economic growth, which is forecast to increase by 6.5 percent in the 2025/2026 financial year. However, imports of goods from India to Germany experienced a decline of 1.9 percent, with chemical products and machinery being the most important imported goods.

Perspectives for the future

India is becoming increasingly important as a procurement market for electronics. Imports here rose by 62 percent to around 1.1 billion US dollars. The production of smartphones, including for Apple, is becoming increasingly important. In addition, there are also increased import numbers in the food sector, especially in the areas of coffee and pet food, which could further diversify trade between the two countries.

The EU and India have been negotiating a free trade agreement since 2007, with the aim of concluding these talks by the end of 2025. A successful agreement could further promote trade exchange and offer Saarland companies new opportunities.
