Saxony's economy under pressure: ray of hope or false hope?

The economic situation in Saxony is deteriorating slightly, but there are also signs of an improvement in the mood. According to the spring economic survey by the Saxon Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the business situation of many companies in the Free State has continued to deteriorate, but at the same time the forecasts show a slight upward trend. While there are indicators of recovery nationwide, some companies are reporting difficult conditions. The Saxon industry reports that 26% are experiencing good business, while 25% are struggling with challenges.

A central aspect of the survey is the low utilization of production capacity, which is causing problems for many companies. In addition, there are increasing trade barriers, which further burden business processes. The balance of business expectations has deteriorated by 7 points to -10, indicating a divided perception of the economic future. Of particular concern is high labor costs, identified as the biggest risk factor by 72% of companies surveyed.

Stagnation and challenges in the industry

A similar situation arises according to another study, which finds a stagnating economic situation in Saxony. The chambers reported a slight increase in the situation balance by one point to 13 points, but this does not represent a significant improvement. The business situation has deteriorated again, especially in industry. High energy costs and growing competition, particularly from China, are putting further pressure on competitiveness.

Almost half of the companies in the industry (50%) are reporting decreased sales, and incoming orders from domestic and international are also decreasing. The forecast business balance for the future deteriorated to -19 points, with a third of companies expecting further deterioration. Domestic demand remains an additional risk, with 72% seeing the decline as critical.

Sectoral differences and employment situation

Compared to other economic sectors, construction is showing somewhat positive developments, although the situation here remains tense. Over half of the construction companies report falling capacity utilization and incoming orders. The business expectation value for this sector is currently -24 points. In the service industry, however, the balance reached a high of 35 points, with 88% of those surveyed reporting good business.

The hospitality and tourism industry has improved to 20 points and 80% of businesses are breaking even or making a profit. Nevertheless, the employment situation remains tense. Around 28% of companies have cut staff, and only in the service sector is there any positive momentum. The general outlook for economic performance points to a slight decline, with interest rate cuts and improved economic activity in neighboring countries seen as possible opportunities.

The burdens of weak domestic demand (66%) and high energy prices (63%) continue to pose major challenges. The signaled uncertainty regarding the economic recovery remains a key issue, particularly with regard to future business development.
