Debt brake: A narrow majority wants to maintain it
According to a recent survey, the majority of Germans are in favor of maintaining the debt brake, while 40 percent are in favor of easing it, especially for public investments. The majority of supporters of the FDP, AfD, Union and Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) are in favor of the debt brake, while SPD and Green Party supporters are mainly in favor of easing it.
The representative survey by the Infratest dimap institute surveyed almost 1,300 eligible voters on Monday and Tuesday. With regard to the 2025 budget, the individual departments had to submit savings proposals in order to save a total of around 20 billion euros. The population sees potential for savings in citizens' money and the integration of refugees, but they are in favor of more spending on the economy, defense, families and children, pensions and pensions as well as the care of old and sick people.
