Fluctuating Garnis: Cooperative Inspection Brings New Hope!

On May 26, 2025, a delegation visited the Quyet Tien Agriculture, Water and Services Cooperative in Tri Phai Municipality. Under the leadership of Le Van Su, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, the cooperative, which has been successfully cooperating with Minh Phu Certified Shrimp Social Company Limited for two years, was inspected.

Within this framework, an ASC-certified shrimp model was introduced, involving 103 households covering an area of 220 hectares. A total of 40 members of the cooperative are active on 103 hectares, with Minh Phu's technical and seed resources provided to increase the efficiency of shrimp production. According to Vo Van Diep, the cooperative's CEO, members achieve harvests of up to VND100 million per hectare per crop.

Environmental protection and challenges

The cooperative underlines its commitment to environmental protection and maintaining high standards in aquaculture. However, it faces numerous challenges, including water pollution, water shortages and problems in seed quality management. Pham Van Dien, chairman of the municipality's People's Committee, highlights the difficulties in ensuring the quality of breeding animals. Although there is cooperation with seed suppliers, they cannot guarantee the quality.

Minh Phu Company provides support of VND1 million per hectare, but the cooperative continues to face production difficulties. For this reason, Le Van Su emphasizes the need to set goals in municipalities and cooperatives and to identify experienced people to support the cooperatives.

Further inspections and development plans

The delegation plans further inspections in all districts and cities of the province between May 26 and 30, 2025 to review the progress in the implementation of several development plans for shrimp, rice and crab production in Ca Mau Province. During these inspections, the production situation in the affected areas will also be examined to remove obstacles to common economic development and strengthen cooperation between the township and Thoi Binh District People's Committees.

The challenges in shrimp farming are not isolated; they are linked to negative impacts on local ecosystems, particularly in poorly managed farms that affect neighboring communities. However, ASC-certified shrimp farms strive to address these challenges by implementing mangrove reforestation measures and conducting environmental impact assessments. These farms are also required to adhere to certain feed requirements and to regularly check water quality to ensure sustainable production.

These developments in the shrimp industry reflect efforts to promote sustainable practices that not only benefit the economy but also protect local ecosystems. Collaboration between cooperatives and companies is a key aspect of overcoming the challenges in the agricultural sector and ensuring responsible shrimp production.
