Traffic jam alarm in the Free State: How to master the Whitsun weekend!
The ADAC Saxony is optimistic about the upcoming traffic for Ascension and Pentecost in the Free State of Saxony. Despite positive forecasts, there are warnings about a bottleneck between Dresden's old town and the Nossen triangle on Autobahn 4 (Görlitz-Eisenach). Significant disruptions are expected on this section of the route until the end of the year due to construction work South German newspaper reported.
The bypass route between Nossen and Wilsdruff, however, should be passable until Ascension Day without major traffic jams, as the construction work in Wilsdruff should be completed by then. The holidays are classic excursion weekends, which can lead to increased traffic in tourist regions. The ADAC recommends drivers travel early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid rush hour.
Possible traffic jams and traffic reports
Numerous congestion pitfalls have been identified for the upcoming holidays, including:
- Bundesstraße 171 in Marienberg (beide Richtungen)
- Bundesstraße 101 in Schwarzenberg
- Bundesstraße 169 in Schneeberg und Gablenz
- Bundesstraße 80 in Lugau / Erdmannsdorf
- Bundesstraße 92 zur Landesgrenze Thüringen
- Grenzübergang der Autobahn 17 in Breitenau Richtung Prag
To avoid traffic jams, the ADAC recommends checking current traffic reports and planning alternative routes. On longer journeys you should also take regular breaks and be patient.
The risk of traffic jams is particularly high during the Ascension Days, as the ADAC publications make clear. On Wednesday, May 28th, the start of the long weekend, this day is considered one of the busiest of the year. A peak time for traffic jams is expected between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Heavy travel and excursion traffic is forecast for many federal states that have school holidays on Friday, May 30th.
Construction work and entry controls
There are currently around 1,200 construction sites in Germany, which further increase the risk of traffic jams. In addition, full closures have been announced on several motorway sections. The ADAC, for example, calls for caution:
- A40 Essen Richtung Duisburg: 28. Mai, 21 Uhr bis 3. Juni, 5 Uhr
- A42 Kamp-Lintfort – Dortmund: 30. Mai, 21 Uhr bis 2. Juni, 5 Uhr
- A67 Mannheim Richtung Mönchhof-Dreieck: 31. Mai, 21 Uhr bis 2. Juni, 5 Uhr
- A45 Hagen – Gießen: bis auf Weiteres gesperrt
Diversions are signposted, but changes are possible at short notice. Travelers also have to expect construction sites in neighboring countries such as Austria and the Czech Republic. In Austria, for example, there is construction work on the Brenner motorway and in the Czech Republic there are traffic jams on the D8 due to tunnel renovations.
In addition, travelers should expect longer waiting times at German borders. Entry controls have been tightened since the beginning of May, which can lead to delays at motorway crossings such as Suben, Walserberg and Kiefersfelden.
The ADAC's recommendations for avoiding traffic jams and delays must be heeded urgently to ensure a smooth journey over the upcoming holiday weekend.
