Electricity crisis in Ecuador: government declares a state of emergency
The government in Ecuador has declared a state of emergency due to power shortages. To ration energy, electricity is switched off for several hours in various regions of the South American country. In addition, Thursday and Friday were declared non-working days by decree. President Daniel Noboa has fired Energy Minister Andrea Arrobo and several other officials amid accusations that they concealed the true extent of the energy crisis.
The acute drought led to historically low water levels in the region's reservoirs. Ecuador gets 78 percent of its electricity from hydropower. In addition, Colombia has stopped exporting electricity to Ecuador because the neighboring country is also struggling with shortages due to the drought. The new acting energy minister, Roberto Luque, emphasized that there is no easy, short-term solution to the situation. According to experts, there has been a failure to adequately invest in the energy sector in recent years.
