Electricity price analysis: net exports and their impact on price

Analysis week 14 of 2024 shows that the low and negative price phases in electricity trading in Germany always correlate with net exports to other European countries. This means that prices fall when Germany exports electricity and rise when imports are made. A significant price jump on Sunday makes this clear, as there is an overproduction of electricity, which leads to an increase in prices, especially when wind power generation decreases and fossil power production is needed to stabilize the grid.

The analysis showed that the share of wind and PV electricity in total electricity generation was around 62.8 percent. With regard to new car registrations in March 2024, there was an increase compared to the previous month, but a decrease compared to the same period last year. The decline in purely electric cars was particularly significant at almost 29 percent.

The dream of 15 million battery-electric vehicles by 2030 is challenging as many customers continue to value the benefits of combustion vehicles. The greenhouse gas quota has also fallen by 75 percent, which reduces the attractiveness of GHG quota trading. There are calls for measures to revitalize this sector in order to achieve climate goals.
