Flash floods in Texas: Chaos and grief after devastating disaster

In Texas, a devastating flash flood has killed at least 43 people, including both children and adults. As of Saturday evening, 15 children and 28 adults have not yet been identified. In particular, many children from a summer camp are missing. The search for the missing continues a day after the severe flooding began. These floods surprised many responsible people and residents who had not expected such magnitude after heavy rain began on Friday morning. Southeastern Switzerland reported that more than 850 people were rescued uninjured, but eight injuries were reported.

In the region where many Americans spend the long weekend on the rivers, many people were rescued from trees to avoid being swept away by the uncontrollable floods. The Guadalupe River rose by almost eight meters within a very short time. This level of flooding is unusual, although it is not uncommon for rivers in the area to overflow their banks. Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick even spoke of a “disastrous flash flood.”

Current developments and relief measures

The rain continued to fall on Saturday and residents are battling the destruction left behind by the floods. The situation is also confusing because many people are without electricity. Floods have also hit infrastructure hard, with electricity poles falling. Television images show cars swept away by the water, uprooted trees and flooded houses. Some bodies were found in cars that had been washed away. daily news found that the number of missing people varies between 23 and 25 girls from the summer camp.

US President Donald Trump spoke on Truth Social and said that he and his wife Melania are praying for the affected families. Additionally, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has promised that more aid will be directed to Texas. Governor Greg Abbott pledged support from “all available forces,” while around 500 rescue workers, 14 helicopters, the Texas National Guard and the US Coast Guard are deployed. Experts warn that further tidal waves are expected.

There was a similar incident in June of this year in which at least ten people died in a flash flood in San Antonio. Rainfall forecasts were said to be between 80 and 150 liters per square meter, but actual rainfall was unexpectedly much higher, leading to this tragic natural event.
