Thuringian delegation travels to the USA: Off to new trading markets!
On Sunday, May 18, 2025, Prime Minister Mario Voigt and Economics Minister Colette Boss-John (both CDU) will set off with a 75-person delegation on the first delegation trip under the new state government to the USA. The main goal of this trip is to strengthen economic relations between Thuringia and the USA, which is considered the most important export market for the Free State. Voigt emphasizes how crucial the USA is as a key partner for Thuringian companies in economic, scientific and strategic terms.
This delegation trip comes at a time when uncertainties about possible US tariffs are weighing on trade relations. Nevertheless, Economics Minister Boss-John sees the trip as an opportunity to strengthen transatlantic economic relations and to have clear discussions with US partners. She would like to better assess current customs policy and make proposals for resuming negotiations on a free trade agreement between Europe and the USA.
Key economic data
Thuringia's trade volume with the USA is an impressive 2.8 billion euros. Thuringia achieved a new export record in 2024 with a value of 2.2 billion euros to the USA. Imports from the USA were at the second highest level at 625 million euros. Around 300 Thuringian companies maintain export relationships with the USA, while 40 of them have investments in US companies. At the same time, around 60 US companies are also invested in Thuringia.
Since 1990, US companies have invested more than 2.5 billion euros in the Free State, creating around 12,000 jobs. Important export goods from Thuringia to the USA are vehicles and vehicle parts, machines, optical products and electrical equipment.
The delegation trip, which will last until May 24, is a significant step to stabilize trade relations and explore future prospects. The Thuringian delegation will actively participate in discussions to set the course for continued successful economic cooperation between Thuringia and the USA. The effort to reduce tariff barriers is particularly important given the economic uncertainties.
In summary, the upcoming visit underlines Thuringia's long-term ambitions to remain visible and active on the international market and shows the state government's willingness to deepen ties with one of the most important trading partners.
