Thun is planning a transport transition: a breath of fresh air for public mobility!

The Thun development area has set decisive guidelines for regional development in the coming years. These measures are part of the 5th generation agglomeration program, which particularly aims to improve public transport as well as bicycle and pedestrian traffic. The initiative comes out of an urgent need as the region increasingly suffers from traffic congestion in the city of Thun. The planned transport measures are mainly to be implemented between 2031 and 2035, which promises a comprehensive and sustainable transformation of the transport network, reports Bern newspaper.

Smaller communities expressed a desire for more flexibility in zoning commercial land. This feedback is part of the regional overall transport and settlement concept, which shows that some communities have challenges with the existing federal and cantonal planning instruments. The implementation of the agglomeration program will take time as many measures are currently still pending.

Structural changes in the Thun development area

Another central aspect of the current developments is the reorganization of the structures in the Thun development area (ERT). A new association for economic development is to be founded, to which all ERT communities can belong. The ERT Economic Commission will be dissolved and its tasks will be distributed among other commissions. This change could increase the efficiency of economic activities in the region.

In 2024, the ERT was able to achieve a profit of 12,000 francs on sales of almost half a million francs. The Economic Commission achieved a profit of almost 14,000 francs on a turnover of around 150,000 francs. The assets of the Economic Commission will be divided, with two thirds going to the new economic development association and one third remaining with the ERT. The member communities have agreed to pay 13 francs per resident in the future.

Outlook and next steps

In order to implement the new structures in the region, the member communities have time to comment on the project group's suggestions. The goal is to adopt the new structures in the fall and initiate their implementation from January 1, 2026. This could represent a positive turnaround for the economic and infrastructural development of the Thun development area, as well as the Mobility Strategy 2050 strives for.
