Trump leaves territorial decisions to Ukraine: summit in Alaska!
US President Donald Trump has announced that he wants to let Ukraine decide whether to cede territory to Russia. This statement was made on the flight to a summit meeting with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska. Trump expressed optimism about the upcoming talks, saying, "Something will come of this." At the same time, he warned that the meeting could have “serious consequences.” The president believes that the ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine are part of Putin's negotiating tactics.
Early in the morning, Trump leaves the White House and boards the presidential plane Air Force One. Arrival in Anchorage is scheduled for 9 p.m. our time. This meeting represents the first face-to-face meeting between Trump and Putin since Trump took office again. The main topic of the meeting is the ongoing Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. Traveling with Trump are Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and special envoy Steve Witkoff.
Geopolitical implications
Trump wrote on Truth Social before his departure: “The stakes are high!!!” (“HIGH STAKES!!!”). The outcome of the conversation could provide decisive impetus for a possible end to the war. However, there are concerns among Ukraine's European allies, particularly Germany, that territorial cessions could potentially be discussed without Ukraine itself being involved in the talks. Ukraine has been fighting the Russian war of aggression for almost three and a half years.
Political situation in the USA
According to a CNN poll of polls, Trump has a nearly 70% chance of winning the 2024 election, while Harris is only ahead of him by two to three points, which is considered insufficient. There are still 32 days until election day on the political agenda.
The meeting between Trump and Putin could therefore not only have an impact on the situation in Ukraine, but also on Trump's political future and his election campaign next year.
