Trump postpones tariffs on EU imports: A new postponement until July!

US President Donald Trump has postponed the introduction of new punitive tariffs on imports from the European Union by a month. Instead of the originally announced date of June 1st, the tariff will now come into force on July 9th. Trump made this announcement after a conversation with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who emphasized that the EU and the US share a close trade relationship and are ready to negotiate quickly. The threatened tariffs could be up to 50 percent and would significantly increase the prices of European products in the United States, potentially affecting U.S. consumers as well.

The announcement of the tariff increase marks a new turning point in the already strained trade relations between the US and the EU. After the Dax fell to its lowest level in two weeks, markets are concerned about the possible impact of tariffs on economic stability. Trump has repeatedly threatened high tariffs in the past, but has often changed his positions, which further increases the uncertainty.

EU negotiations and possible solutions

The EU, for its part, sees the tariffs as unjustified and has already promised counter-tariffs if negotiations fail. Ursula von der Leyen has proposed an agreement to mutually eliminate all tariffs on industrial goods - an offer that the Trump administration has not yet accepted. Possible solutions include expanding American export capacities for liquefied natural gas and importing more military technology and agricultural goods from the USA.

Maroš Šefčovič, responsible for EU trade policy and a key figure in the negotiations with 35 years of foreign policy experience, remains optimistic that a diplomatic solution can be found. The former vice president of the European Commission is skilled in the body language of commerce and speaks several languages, including English and French.

Consequences for international trade

A final decision on tariffs could have serious implications for the global economy. The prospect of higher tariffs by the US has already worried some market players, who fear a possible recession in the global economy. The EU, on the other hand, appears unimpressed and remains calm as negotiations continue.

Trump regularly criticizes the EU and sees it as an unfair competitor in trade. These increasing tensions have the potential to not only affect trade relations between the two economic powers, but also to permanently disrupt global markets and trade processes.

Whether and how the situation will develop remains to be seen, but the signs point to negotiation and diplomacy as the clock ticks and the deadline for tariff adjustments approaches.
