Companies have a duty: Democratic values need attitude!

At a time when political issues are increasingly shaping society, companies are faced with the challenge of no longer staying out of these debates. According to an article from absatzwirtschaft.de, companies must actively take responsibility and communicate their positions clearly. Companies play a key role in shaping work culture and public dialogue and are therefore called upon to stand up for the values of democracy.

A recent YouGov survey shows that almost two thirds of Germans doubt the future of democracy, which is seen as a social alarm signal. For this reason, it is essential for companies to protect their social license and future viability. If companies do not take a stand, this is no longer recognized as a neutral decision.

Responsibility and positioning

The responsibility of companies must be made public. Communication not only means information, but also clear positioning. Virginie Briand, partner at Deloitte Digital, emphasizes that companies should align their structures, processes and decisions with their attitude. A new understanding of the partnership between business, politics and society is required.

Business people must actively participate in the democratic culture. Peter Schubert, head of studies at ZiviZ in the Stifterverband, emphasizes the need for companies to act as comrades-in-arms for democracy. Despite the support of around 75% of the companies surveyed for a public commitment to democratic values, concrete action regarding corporate political responsibility is often rare.

Challenges and risks

Despite the positive attitude of many companies towards democratic values, almost 50% of them see political positions as potentially damaging to business. This reflects hesitancy reinforced by fear of economic disadvantage. In the future, companies will have to find a balance between commitment to corporate values and open dialogue in order to get involved not only in the economy, but also in society.

In the current discussion it has become clear that an attitude without friction or risk is no longer enough. Companies that are part of the market must be aware that they are also part of society and cannot remain silent while democratic foundations are crumbling. An honest exchange on equal terms is necessary to promote and maintain democracy.
