Traffic chaos in MV: Highest number of accident deaths since 2015!

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, road safety will be an explosive issue in 2024. The figures show that the number of road deaths increased in the first five months compared to the same period last year. From January to May 2024, a total of 36 people died in road accidents, representing an increase of eight fatalities compared to 2023, when 28 fatal accidents were recorded. These worrying figures were published by the South German newspaper published.

At the same time, the number of seriously injured people fell to 318, an improvement of 18.9 percent. The number of minor injuries also fell and amounted to 1,644, a decrease of 13 percent. Overall, the number of traffic accidents fell by 9.1 percent, resulting in 20,453 incidents. Tragically, 93 people died in traffic accidents in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania throughout 2024, representing an increase of 36 fatalities compared to the previous year. This means the number of traffic deaths has reached its highest level since 2015.

Accident statistics 2024

The traffic accident statistics presented by Interior Minister Christian Pegel show that there were a total of 55,106 traffic accidents in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which means a decrease of 1.0 percent compared to the previous year. The number of traffic accidents resulting in personal injury remained almost constant at 4,895 cases, with an increase of just 0.3 percent. Compared to the numbers before the corona pandemic, the overall number of accidents remains below previous levels.

The increase in traffic deaths is particularly alarming. 93 people lost their lives in traffic in 2024, an increase of 63 percent compared to 2023. This is the highest level since 2015. Of those who died, 14 were cyclists, a dramatic increase compared to just two in 2023. Nine of them were not wearing helmets, and five of them were Pedelec riders.

Causes and future prospects

A third of the traffic fatalities, i.e. 31 people, died in collisions with trees. Motorized two-wheeled drivers are also affected: the number of accidents rose by 16.7 percent, while accidents involving small electric vehicles increased by 34 percent. In addition, around a third of those killed in traffic were over 65 years old.

The statistics also show that the number of seriously injured people fell slightly to 1,103 people, while the number of slightly injured people increased by 0.4 percent to 5,117 people, but remains below the level before the corona pandemic. In terms of wildlife accidents, 17,129 were recorded, with an increase of 0.6 percent and two deaths.

Excessive speed remains a common cause of accidents, although it has been reduced by 22 percent to 650 accidents with personal injuries. At the same time, accidents caused by failure to yield right of way increased by 7 percent, and accidents caused by overtaking increased by 20 percent. Of particular concern is the increase in the frequency of accidents among children up to 18 years of age and those over 75 years of age, which underlines the need for road safety work and prevention programs.

Minister Pegel emphasized the urgent need to improve road safety for all road users and reduce accidents. The current figures illustrate how fundamental these efforts are to prevent tragic accidents and protect more lives.
