Wealth development in Germany: This is what the current study says

The Deutsche Bundesbank carries out a study on the assets of Germans every three years. Citizens are asked about their financial situation. After the previous study from 2017, the last study was not carried out until 2021 due to the corona pandemic. Four fifths of those surveyed had already taken part in the previous study. For this reason, it is very easy to see how assets have developed in Germany.

The study found that Germans' wealth increased significantly between 2017 and 2021. Both the average wealth and the so-called median wealth have increased. The average wealth rose from 232,900 euros in 2017 to 315,500 euros in 2021. The median wealth climbed from 70,800 euros to 106,600 euros in the same period.

The study of household wealth is based on the household's net worth, which consists of assets such as real estate, stocks, securities, cars and cash minus existing debts. The distribution of wealth in Germany can be shown by lining up net assets in layers, which provide information about which wealth class your assets belong to.

The amount of household assets varies depending on the number of people living in the household. Single-person households have a median wealth of 40,800 euros, while two-person households already have a median value of 169,200 euros. For example, to be one of the 10% richest households in Germany, assets of more than 725,900 euros were required in 2021.
