Wealth development in Germany: Study shows significant increase

The Deutsche Bundesbank carries out a comprehensive study of Germans' assets every three years, which provides important insights into their financial situation. The most recent survey, which was only carried out again in 2021 due to the corona pandemic, shows a significant increase in assets between 2017 and 2021. Both average and median assets increased during this period.

The average wealth, which takes into account all recorded household assets, increased from 232,900 euros in 2017 to 315,500 euros in 2021. In contrast, the median wealth, which represents the wealth in the middle of the sorted values, provides a more precise representation. This increased from 70,800 euros to 106,600 euros in the same period.

An important finding of the study is the distribution of wealth in Germany, which makes it possible to use net assets to identify strata to which households belong. For example, a household with assets of 50,000 euros was in the range of the 40% to 50% richest households in Germany in 2021. To be among the 10% richest households in the country, assets of over 725,900 euros were required.

Of course, the amount of household assets depends on the number of people living in a household. The median value of assets for single-person households is 40,800 euros, while for two-person households it is already 169,200 euros. This study offers valuable insight into the financial situation of Germans and enables citizens to assess and reflect on their financial position in comparison to others.
