Preview of the VW ID.Code: electric SUV highlight for China

VW's ID.Code study was presented as a preview of a new large electric SUV for China. In keeping with this, the show car was unveiled at Auto China 2024. In contrast to the current VW SUVs, the proportions of the ID.Code appear less massive. Particularly noteworthy is the vehicle's lighting concept, which makes it possible to communicate with other road users. This concept includes a 3D light bar at the front, interrupted by the illuminated VW logo, as well as the so-called “3D eyes” on the sides.

In certain situations, the “3D Eyes” of the VW ID.Code simulate eyes that, for example, look at the driver when he or she approaches the vehicle. With fully autonomous driving at level 4, the eyes can move left and right. There are a variety of displays inside the vehicle, including using the side windows and the passenger side of the windshield as displays for things like the navigation map or battery status. In addition, the vehicle has a light ensemble that can display thank you hearts and is resumed at the rear.

What is particularly noticeable in the interior of the VW ID.Code are the numerous displays, including a slightly curved screen under the windshield, a display between the front seats and an instrument cluster in the traditional sense is missing. Instead, a head-up display with augmented reality takes on various functions, such as the virtual projection of turning arrows from the navigation system directly onto the road. The displays are also operated via touch, voice and gestures. Another highlight of the vehicle is the “hygiene mode” with the “Lupo” vacuum robot, which uses UV light and antibacterial coated filters to clean the air in the car when no one is in the vehicle.

VW has not yet announced when a production version of the large SUV will come onto the market. The study was developed specifically for the Chinese market, and it remains unclear whether the model will also be offered in other regions in the future.
