White fox in the Munich district: rarity discovered with blue eyes!

A nature photographer in the Munich district was presented with an extraordinary sight: he discovered a white fox whose appearance can be traced back to a genetic peculiarity. Dominik Reigl, who regularly travels with his camera in the region, first saw the young fox at dusk on the edge of a corn field. He was about to stop his exploration when the animal caught his eye. The fox has completely white fur and striking blue eyes.

Heinz Sedlmeier, managing director of the State Association for Bird and Nature Conservation (LBV), commented on the discovery and described it as rare. The images and video recordings of the fox were sent to the LBV after the discovery. According to Sedlmeier, this fox is not an arctic fox, as it is characterized by its different facial shape, brown eyes and fluffier fur. The young fox does not suffer from albinism, the typical characteristic of which would be red eyes, but rather shows the pigmentation disorder called leucism.

Leucism as a rare pigmentation disorder

Leucism is a genetic disorder that reduces natural coloration in animals and can occur in many wildlife species. Although this genetic defect occurs more frequently in crows, only a few completely white specimens are known in red foxes. Sedlmeier emphasized that observing a completely white red fox is extraordinary. The exact location of the fox is not disclosed for conservation reasons so as not to disturb it.

The discovery of the white fox has piqued the interest of nature lovers and photographers. Reigl, who observed the animal over several days, is particularly excited about this rare sight. His observations and the published images could help raise awareness of such extraordinary animals and emphasize the importance of their conservation.
