World market leader Wafios in Reutlingen reports short-time work for 450 employees!
The mechanical engineering company Wafios from Reutlingen, known as the world market leader in the field of wire and tube bending machines, announced today that short-time work will be introduced for around 60% of its workforce from July 1st this year. Around 450 employees will be affected by this measure, which, given the total number of 750 employees, affects a significant proportion of the workforce. This decision was made in response to declining order numbers and rising costs, such as Mercury reported.
Wafios' sales amounted to 189.3 million euros in 2023. Company boss Uwe-Peter Weigmann informed the workforce about the upcoming measures at a staff meeting on June 4th. The short-time work will last six months and aims to reduce the working hours of the affected employees by 10 to 15%. There are no plans to exceed the 20% mark. Wafios has emphasized that this is a strategic decision to respond to the current market situation without having to make staff cuts.
Context of short-time work
According to Wafios, some business areas such as e-mobility and the spring area are doing well, while other areas are experiencing declines. Despite these challenges, the company plans not to make any job cuts and reiterated its commitment to the Reutlingen location. This decision contrasts with developments in the previous year, when the Reutlingen-based mechanical engineering company Manz also introduced short-time work before the company filed for bankruptcy and was sold. FR emphasizes that Wafios does not see short-time work as an alarm signal, but rather as a temporary measure to stabilize the company.
The decision to implement short-time work can be interpreted as part of a pragmatic approach in order to react flexibly to market conditions. While some areas of the company continue to thrive, the general uncertainty in the industry cannot be ignored. Wafios remains optimistic and is counting on the order situation to stabilize in the future.
