Less corn, more winter wheat: Agriculture is changing in Saxony-Anhalt!

Agriculture in Saxony-Anhalt will be characterized by significant changes in 2024. Loud sueddeutsche.de The area under cultivation of corn is decreasing significantly, while the cultivation of winter wheat is increasing. The declines in maize cultivation are severe, particularly in silage maize, which is expected to be grown on 104,000 hectares, a decline of 10% compared to last year. The areas for grain maize and maize to mature also fell by 17% to 37,800 hectares.

The reasons for this development are diverse. Expiring contracts for biogas plants reduce the need for corn. There has also been a decline in animal husbandry, particularly pigs and dairy cattle. However, after three years of drought, a bountiful corn harvest is expected in 2024, further complicating the picture.

Higher acreage for other crops

In contrast to corn, the cultivation of table potatoes recorded an increase of 15.7% to 15,700 hectares. This increase is due to the good prices in the previous year. Sugar beet cultivation, on the other hand, will be reduced by 9% to 49,600 hectares. One reason for this is the previous year's good harvests, which resulted in lower demand for beets, combined with changing eating habits and increasing demand for low-sugar products.

Particularly noteworthy is the increase in the area cultivated for winter wheat. This will grow to 288,700 hectares in 2024, which corresponds to an increase of 12.4% compared to the previous year. With a share of 58.8%, winter wheat is now the dominant grain in Saxony-Anhalt. The area for winter rapeseed also increased slightly by 0.6% to 122,900 hectares. The cultivation of winter barley, on the other hand, deteriorated by 5.7% to 96,300 hectares.

Overview of the agricultural area

For example, the areas for grain production are 390 hectares, around 250 hectares for wheat and 210 hectares for rye and winter cereals. An area of 70 hectares was designated for root crops, including 60 hectares for potatoes.

Overall, these data reflect the current trend and strategic adjustments in agriculture in Saxony-Anhalt. The move toward more winter wheat and previously less corn shows how market conditions and agricultural practices influence each other.
