Vienna invests billions: construction sites bring progress and jobs!
Road and rail construction in Vienna is receiving a strong impetus from the summer construction sites, which are currently considered necessary in order to renovate and modernize the infrastructure. Wiener Linien, ASFINAG and ÖBB have launched a joint awareness campaign under the motto “Construction sites pass, progress remains”. The aim of this initiative is to highlight the benefits of the ongoing construction sites for the general public, such as progress, climate protection and employment.
Wiener Linien will invest a total of 324 million euros in various modernization projects in 2024 and 2025, which will create over 3,200 jobs. 63% of the companies commissioned are based in Vienna, which further strengthens the local economy. These modernization measures are essential for the safe transport of 2.4 million passengers every day, reports meinkreis.at.
Future investments in the rail and road network
The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) are planning to invest a total of around 20 billion euros in the expansion and modernization of the rail network by 2030. In 2024, ÖBB will already transport over half a billion passengers. Over 70 railway companies use the extensive, 5,000 kilometer network, which is one of the densest in the EU. In order to meet the increasing traffic and mobility figures, continuous expansion and modernization are essential, according to information from wienerlinien.at.
Around 4.8 billion euros will be spent in the coming years on the maintenance and resilience of the infrastructure, particularly against the challenges of extreme weather events. According to ÖBB, every euro invested generates around 1.4 euros in added value for the economy. These investments not only ensure mobility, but also strengthen the economic basis, as over half of the orders are awarded to small and micro-enterprises.
ASFINAG's commitment to road infrastructure
ASFINAG's investments in the area of road construction are also noteworthy. By 2030, ASFINAG plans to invest 11.8 billion euros in the expansion and modernization of the motorway and expressway network. A record budget of 1.8 billion euros is planned for 2025 alone, of which 950 million euros will go to renovation projects. What is particularly noteworthy is that around 90% of the material used in these renovations is recycled. This not only contributes to sustainability, but also to climate protection in Austria.
In summary, it can be said that ongoing investments in infrastructure not only have a positive effect on citizens' mobility, but also provide significant economic stimulus and create jobs. The ongoing projects, supported by the awareness campaign from ASFINAG, ÖBB and Wiener Linien, highlight the necessity and benefits of construction sites in the city.
