Business is pushing for the rapid construction of the Carola Bridge in Dresden!

The collapsed Carola Bridge in Dresden calls on the local economy to act quickly. Several business associations are urging the city council to decide immediately on a replacement building. According to a report in the Borkener Zeitung, various organizations, including the Chamber of Crafts and the Dresden Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK), support the plans and are calling for a decision before the summer break. Jörg Dittrich, President of the Dresden Chamber of Crafts, emphasizes the city council's responsibility to make the right decisions to ensure the city's economic performance.

Andreas Sperl, President of the IHK Dresden, emphasizes the urgency of the matter. A quick reconstruction could avoid loss of time in terms of construction prices and project costs. A replacement bridge would have the advantage that, according to the city administration, it could be completed three to six years faster than a completely new bridge. Adjustments such as wider cycle paths and a reduction in the number of lanes for car traffic are conceivable.

Planned monitoring committee for the construction

As part of the planning, a press conference was held on May 28, 2025, at which the key points for the new replacement building were presented. Building mayor Stephan Kühn announced the formation of an accompanying committee that would consist of the city council, representatives of the Free State and various interest groups. The aim of this committee is to be involved in key steps of the project and to develop an innovative and sustainable Carola Bridge that can be integrated into urban development.

The planning aims to achieve rapid construction of the new bridge without delay. Important aspects such as shipping, monument and environmental protection as well as traffic function should be taken into account. Specific key points include the creation of safe traffic systems for motor vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians and local public transport as well as the connection to the Elbe cycle path.

Political responsibility and voting

The city administration is also planning to supplement the template to include decision-makers and interest groups in order to ensure transparent and effective project implementation. An open letter from the Chamber of Crafts and IHK, which has already been signed by other associations such as Dehoga Saxony and the Saxony Trade Association, calls for quick action in order not to endanger the city's infrastructure.

The city council is responsible for the final decision on the replacement building. The vote on this is scheduled for June 19th. This makes it clear that both economic and urban development interests are closely linked in the debate about the Carola Bridge.

By combining quick action and effective planning, those responsible hope that the new Carola Bridge not only meets existing requirements, but is also forward-looking for urban development.
