Wolfsburg causes frustration: companies rate the location as unattractive!
Wolfsburg's city center is increasingly being rated worse by the local economy. According to a current survey by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK), Wolfsburg as a business location received an average rating of just 3.1 from a total of 1,627 companies surveyed. This number shows a worrying decline compared to the last survey in 2020, when the value was 2.5. The dissatisfaction is expressed in the voices of entrepreneurs, who mainly cite high costs for commercial space and real estate, inadequate mobility offerings and a lack of digital administrative procedures as problematic factors. In addition, the lack of skilled workers is perceived as a significant disadvantage.
A significant part of the survey also dealt with the perception of the location and the satisfaction of the companies. The negative aspects of the city center in particular are increasingly coming into focus. The mayor of Wolfsburg, Dennis Weilmann (CDU), emphasizes the need to improve bureaucracy and approval procedures. In the course of this, he referred to a ten-point plan that was presented in January and is intended to sustainably strengthen the economic situation in the city.
Positive aspects despite challenges
Despite the criticism, there is also positive feedback. Companies emphasize the good local amenities as well as the leisure and cultural offerings. In addition, an accompanying analysis of Wolfsburg's brand identity showed that Wolfsburg is perceived as an economically strong location. The location is supported by positive location factors such as proximity to customers, numerous conference options and the quality of life on site.
However, a critical perception regarding the innovation climate and the supply of qualified workers also becomes clear. Entrepreneurs also complain about increasing vacancies in the city center, high parking costs and a lack of cleanliness as further challenges that need to be overcome.
Skilled workers and space requirements in focus
The survey also highlights the need for skilled workers and specific space requirements of companies. WMG has responded to the challenges and supports the companies with various services. Nevertheless, general economic development remains a concern that affects all industries in Wolfsburg.
In summary, the company survey shows that Wolfsburg's economy is in a critical state, which is affected by both external and internal factors. Commitment and strategic adjustments are necessary to ensure the attractiveness of the location in the long term.
