The number of businesses in Germany is increasing rapidly!
In the first quarter of 2025, there is a positive picture for the German corporate landscape: around 36,500 larger companies were founded, which corresponds to an increase of 11.4 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year. This information comes from the Federal Statistical Office, which records companies with greater economic importance. Overall, there was an increase of over 6,000 companies with greater economic importance in the first half of the year.
Greater economic importance is found when a business is founded by a legal entity or by a person with a craft card. Small businesses are not included in this count. During the same period, the number of operational closures in this sector also increased, indicating that it is not just new start-ups that are increasing.
Stability of the operating landscape
A look at the statistical data from the previous year, 2024, shows that around 120,900 companies of greater economic importance were founded throughout the year. This represents an increase of 2.1 percent compared to 2023. At the same time, the number of complete operational tasks in this area rose by 2.7 percent to around 99,200.
These developments show that the number of new businesses founded in 2024 was higher than the number of business closures. This is a positive signal for the stability and dynamic growth of the economy in Germany.
Total number of business registrations
General business registrations, which include start-ups, business takeovers, conversions and moves from other registration districts, rose by a total of 0.2 percent to around 716,400 in 2024. In the same year, the total number of newly founded businesses was around 594,500, which also corresponds to a slight increase of 0.2 percent compared to 2023.
On the other hand, full commercial vacancies rose to about 503,400, an increase of 3.4 percent compared to the previous year. This shows that although many new companies are being founded, more and more companies are also ceasing their activities.
In summary, the figures from the first months of 2025 and the data from 2024 reflect the dynamic development on the German corporate market. Despite the increasing number of operational tasks, the trend towards new start-ups still seems to be strong. While the Federal Statistical Office has recorded encouraging increases, it remains to be seen how these developments will develop over the course of the year.
