Career orientation required at high schools: ZDH wants comprehensive measures.
The Central Association of German Crafts (ZDH) has made clear demands on economic policy that are aimed at concrete measures instead of empty promises. A central concern is nationwide career orientation at all types of schools, including high schools. Robert Habeck's announcement that in the future all federal states should also hold a craft day at high schools received great applause at the opening of the trade fair.
Another issue that affects trade and the economy as a whole is the question of a secure and affordable energy supply. At a forum as part of the opening of the trade fair, there was a discussion between Habeck and the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder. While Söder criticized the end of German nuclear power plants and referred to the expansion of nuclear power in other European countries, Habeck argued that nuclear power was too expensive. He also pointed out that the price of gas in Germany had returned to the level before the Ukraine war and that companies could increasingly rely on solar roofs and wind turbines to supply energy.
There are around a million craft businesses in Germany that, with around 5.7 million employees and 350,000 trainees, generated sales of around 735 billion euros in 2022. These figures illustrate the importance of the craft sector for the German economy and underline the need for concrete measures to strengthen the industry.
The demand for increased career orientation in schools and the discussion about a sustainable energy policy are central issues that affect both the skilled trades and the entire economy. It is clear that there is a need for action to ensure the future viability of the craft sector in Germany and to overcome the challenges in the area of energy supply. It remains to be seen to what extent political decision-makers will meet the demands of the trades and take concrete steps to implement the required measures.
