Donohoe remains powerful: re-elected as Eurogroup President!
Paschal Donohoe will remain at the head of the Eurogroup for another two and a half years. The re-election took place unanimously at a meeting in Brussels attended by the finance ministers of the 20 euro countries. Donohoe, who is 50 and belongs to the Conservative Party, was the only candidate nominated for the post. His fellow candidates, Carlos Cuerpo from Spain and Rimantas Sadzius from Lithuania, withdrew their candidacies.
The election was announced by the European Council and Donohoe expressed his gratitude for the trust of his ministerial colleagues. He stressed the need to strengthen the euro area's resilience to geopolitical changes.
Goals for the coming years
In his new term, Donohoe plans to drive progress in a number of areas. The central goals include strengthening the monetary area and promoting budget policy coordination. He would also like to further develop the capital markets union, the digital euro and the banking union.
Donohoe, who was first elected president in July 2020, had already been re-elected unopposed in 2022. His third term begins on July 13, 2025.
Background to the Eurogroup
The Eurogroup is made up of the finance ministers of the current 20 countries in the Eurozone. They meet about once a month to make joint economic and tax policy decisions. In January 2026, Bulgaria will adopt the euro and join the Eurogroup, which could further influence the dynamics within this group.
EU Economic Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis emphasizes that the EU can act as an “anchor of stability”. The German Finance State Secretary Jeanette Schwamberger, who represented her country, was also present at the meeting. The Eurogroup therefore plays a crucial role in coordinating the economic interests and challenges in the Eurozone.
