FDP confusion: zigzag course during economic transition

The FDP is currently guessing about its course, especially with regard to the required “economic turnaround”. On Monday, the party leadership passed a 12-point paper calling, among other things, for the abolition of solidarity, lower taxes on overtime and a reduction in company tax to 25 percent.

However, this course met with resistance when the CDU/CSU tried to have the points voted on in the Bundestag and was blocked by the SPD, Greens and FDP. Now a committee is supposed to review the matter. The FDP is expected to officially decide on the 12-point change at the party conference today.

Various experts expressed criticism of the FDP's approach. Politics professor Jürgen Falter from the University of Mainz sees the FDP in a dilemma: on the one hand, it has to strengthen its own profile, but on the other hand, it has to take the coalition partners into account in order to keep the alliance stable. This leads to a back-and-forth that seems like theater and follows an internal logic.

Pollster Hermann Binkert from INSA warns that a party that does not keep its promises could lose credibility. The true credibility of a party only becomes apparent when its promises are actually implemented. It remains to be seen how the FDP will continue its zigzag course in the future and whether it can thereby maintain its credibility.
